Large Area SiPM Tiles
In the context of the Hyperimage project, a large area SiPM tile was developed, in collaboration with Philips Healthcare. Having a large photo-sensitive area is mandatory for the SiPM technology to be attractive for industrial applications, such as, but not limited to, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Computed Emission Tomography (SPECT). On the other hand, covering a large area with a monolithic array of detectors is not possible mainly due to the detector production yield.
The compromise solution, adopted by all the SiPM manufacturers, is to build a hybrid tile composed of many separate SiPM dies, tighltly mounted together. The main drawback is a reduction of the Fill Factor and of the presence of dead regions between the dies, due to the mounting tolerances and the dead area around the die. For the tile shown on the right, we have used several monolithic 2x2 arrays of 4x4 mm2 SiPMs mounted together, for a total active area of 3.2 x 3.2 cm2.
Similar SiPM tiles are available through AdvanSiD, which is the sipn-off company of SRS.
