Short bio

Claudio Piemonte was born in Udine, Italy, in 1972. 

He received the "Laurea" degree (M.S.) in Electronics Engineering from the University of Trieste, Italy, in 1997.

From 1999 to 2002, he was with the National Institute for Nuclear Research (INFN), section of Trieste, Italy, as a fellow. In 2002 he joined Microsystems Area of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (former ITC-irst), Trento, Italy, as a Research Associate.

His current research interests are focused on the development of silicon radiation detectors and low-level light sensors for high-energy physics experiments and medical applications. Since 2008 he has been coordinating the R&D activity on these topics within FBK.

Claudio Piemonte has coauthored more than 70 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings. In 2006 he received a "Certificate for outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear radiation measurements" from the Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. He regurarly review papers on international journals such as: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, IEEE Electron Device Letters, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, Microelectronics Journal.

    Process simulations of a fabrication technology for detector compatible front-end circuits on high-resistivity silicon,
    This report describes the activity carried out to characterize, by means of a process simulator, a technology (developed at ITC-irst in 1999) aimed at the production of particle detectors with integrated front-end electronics. The main part of the work has been dedicated to the calibration of the parameters involved in the simu- lation of the implantation and diffusion steps. This has been carried out comparing the calculated dopant profiles with a set of experimental data (SIMS, Spreading Resistance, Capacitance-Voltage measurements). It has been evidenced that it is extremely important to have dierent types of measurement for each layer in order to obtain an accurate calibration. In general, satisfactory results have been achived, and the simulated profiles can now be used to perform device simulations of the transistors implemented in the layout. Furthermore, a calibrated process simulator allows the definition of a new process flow with improved characteristics,

    A general overview of research activities in the field of particle detectors at ITC-irst (Trento, Italy) will be presented. In particular, we are currently involved in medium-series fabrication of double-sided detectors for AMS and ALICE experiments, as well as in research projects, among them the radiation hardening of silicon detectors by means of oxygenation processes. Other fields of interest, to be explored within the RD50 framework, include the integration of a bulk micromachining technology with the process used for the fabrication of microstrip detectors, thus allowing the realization of innovative (thin, 3D) detectors for High Energy Physics.,
